2024 Madison Capitols NHL Draft Preview

The United States Hockey League takes a team-by-team look ahead of the 2024 NHL Draft. 

The Madison Capitols have had over 20 players selected in the NHL Draft since 1985. Their highest selection of all time when Finland native, Miko Matikka, was selected in the 3rd round, 67th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in 2022.

Minnesota native Austin Burnevik began his USHL career with the NTDP, playing for Team USA from 2021-23 where he tallied 13 goals and 12 assists in 65 games played. He joined the Madison Capitols for the 2023-24 season where he led the team in scoring with 40 goals and 31 assists for a total of 71 points in 61 games. His 71 poins were the most scored in a single season by any player in Capitols franchise history. He finished the season seventh in the league in scoring and second in goals. Burnevik was named to the All-USHL Third Team and selected to play in the Chipotle All-American Game. Following his junior hockey career Burnevik is committed to play college hockey at St. Cloud State University.

College: University of Minnesota-Duluth

John Stout played Minnesota High School Hockey and served as assistant captain for Minnetonka during the 2023-24 season. There the left-shot defenseman tallied six goals and 24 assists through 28 games marking himself as the Skippers top-scoring blueliner. His outstanding play earned him the 2024 Reed Larson Award, given annually to the top senior defenseman in Minnesota. After being called up to play for the Capitols in March, Stout appeared in 15 games adding two goals and an assitst. The 6-foot-two, 187lb defenseman is committed to play college hockey at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

The USHL has had 50-or-more players selected in each of the last six NHL Drafts, with a league-best 57 chosen in 2022 and 2018. In all the USHL has seen 1,041 of its players selected in total, including four first-overall picks, with at least one player taken in each draft but one dating back to 1981
