Team USA 4, Norway 1 | Pool Play
Gothenburg, Sweden ---- A three-goal second period keyed Team USA’s 4-1 win over Norway in tournament-opening action at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship Tuesday in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Team USA, which includes 22 players who have played in the USHL, outshot Norway by a 14-10 margin in the first period, but at the end of 20 minutes of action the score stood 0-0.
Jimmy Snuggerud (USA Hockey NTDP 2020-22) got the ball rolling midway through the second when he scored with a shot from between the hash marks. Gavin Brindley (Tri-City 2020-22) wired a one-timer while on a power play at 9:59 to make it 2-0. Brindley scored again with a shot high on the shortside at 16:33 and at the end of 40 minutes of action, the Americans held a 3-0 lead.
Norway finally put one past USA netminder Trey Augustine (USA Hockey 2021-23) at 4:18 of the third, but Isaac Howard (USA Hockey NTDP 2020-22) responded 25 seconds later, as Team USA regained its three-goal cushion to close out the scoring in the game.
Augustine finished with 21 saves as Team USA owned a 44-23 shots on goal advantage in the win.
Next action for Team USA comes Thursday with an 11:00 a.m. EST face-off vs. Switzerland scheduled.
