A shutout and two overtime decisions provide highlights for last night's eight games

Chicago 4, USA Hockey NTDP U17s 3

In a game that featured three ties, Chicago scored consecutive goals in the second period to take control of the game.

USA Hockey NTDP forward Will Moore scored twice in the first period, while Anthony Cardilli and Michael Emerson scored for the visiting Steel and after the initial 20 minutes of action, the score stood 2-2.

Carter Amico got his first USHL goal when he scored at 2:19 of the second to put the U17s up 3-2, but after Jordan Brisson and Thor Byfuglien tallied soon thereafter, Chicago held a 4-3 edge at the end of the second.

The two teams battled through a scoreless third period with the Steel coming away with the one-goal victory.

Byfuglien, who got the game-winner, had a two-point night with a goal and an assist.

Louka Cloutier, who finished with 21 saves, recorded the win for Chicago, while Joel Slavick was credited with 27 stops for the U17s.


Waterloo 3, Des Moines 1

Waterloo rode the solid goaltending of Calvin Vachon in picking up a 3-1 win at Des Moines Friday.

The Black Hawks, who were outshot 33-30 in the contest, trailed 1-0 early in the first after Buccaneers forward Braedon Ford tallied a power play marker at 4:56.   Gavin Lindberg replied for the Black Hawks nine seconds later and after 20 minutes, the score stood 1-1.

Waterloo grabbed the lead at 7:46 of the second on Griffin Erdman’s 10th goal of the year and Grady Deering added an insurance tally at 19:12 of the third as the Black Hawks won for the eighth time in the last 10 games.

 Playing in his first year in the USHL, Vachon finished the night with 32 saves and is now 14-5-0 this season.


Fargo 5, Madison 2

Lee Parks and Jake Fisher both scored twice in lifting league-leading Fargo to a 5-2 home win over Madison Friday.

Andrew Kuzma scored a power play goal at 15:20 of the opening period for the Capitols, but the Force held a 2-1 lead after the first period on earlier goals from Parks and Fisher.

Max Nagel tied it when he scored at 4:11 of the second, but Fisher, a Denver commit, scored on the power play at 11:49 and it was a 3-2 Fargo lead by the end of the second.

Parks added his second of the game at 4:35 of the third and Mac Swanson’s 12th goal of the season, which came at 13:25, made it an insurmountable three-goal cushion.

Rookie netminder Hampton Slukynsky remained unbeaten on the season for the Force by stopping 26 shots in the contest in upping his record to 15-0-0-0.


Green Bay 5, Youngstown 4 overtime

Youngstown held a 3-0 lead to start the game, but could not hold off a Green Bay rally with the host Gamblers earning a 5-4 win in overtime Friday.

Adam Pietila, Brandon Svoboda and Luke Osburn tallied before the game was 10 minutes old as the Phantoms got off to a fast start.  Ryan Humphrey put the Gamblers on the board at 13:35 to cut the lead to two goals before the end of the first.

Svoboda’s second goal of the game made it 4-1, but a Mikey DeAngelo power play marker at 16:51 pulled Green Bay within two.

Third-period power play goals from Blake Bechen at 3:45 and Julian Lutz at 18:17 made it 4-4 and forced overtime.

Ben Poitras scored the game-winner at 1:11 of the extra session when he cycled the puck at the top of the slot before wiring a shot that beat Owen Bartoszkiewicz glove side.

Bartoszkiewicz finished with 32 saves in the game, while Green Bay netminder Adam Gajan, who is tied for the league-lead for wins with 15, had 28.


Lincoln 5, Sioux Falls 2

Lucas Massie stopped 42 shots in backstopping Lincoln to a 5-2 win over Sioux Falls Friday.

After a scoreless opening frame that saw the visiting Stampede outshoot the Stars 12-6, Ryan Spinale and Jared Mangan scored to give Lincoln a 2-0 lead.  J.J. Wiebusch got his 19th of the season when he scored at 19:44 and at the end of the second, the Stars held a one-goal lead.

Lincoln took control of the game with three consecutive goals in the first seven minutes of the third period with Matt Maltais and two from Keaton Peters doing the damage.  Jaksen Panzer got one back for Sioux Falls at 19:04 to close out the scoring in the contest.

Massie, a Union commit, stopped a career-high 42 shots in the game for the Stars.  Michael Chambre had 32 saves for the Stampede.


Muskegon 3, Omaha 0

Shikhabutdin Gadzhiev’s first career shutout highlighted Muskegon’s 3-0 win at Omaha Friday night.

Michigan commit Matvei Gridin opened the scoring when he scored at 15:50 and after the end of the first period, the Lumberjacks owned a 1-0 lead.

Gridin got his second of the game to make it 2-0 at 1:14 of the third and Jack Galanek’s shorthanded, empty-net tally at 17:44 closed out the scoring in the game.

Gadzhiev, playing in his fifth career game, finished with 25 saves in earning the shutout as Muskegon upped its record to 20-12-1-1 on the season.


Cedar Rapids 5, Dubuque 2

Cedar Rapids got goals from five different players and solid goaltending from Sam Scopa in gaining a 5-2 road win at Dubuque Friday night.

It was 1-1 at the end of one after Dubuque received the first career USHL goal from Matt Desiderio and Cedar Rapids received a goal from Kason Muscutt.

Drew Stewart’s goal at 16:45 put the RoughRiders up 2-1 by the end of the second.

Back-to-back goals from Isaac Johnson and Landan Resendes made it a 4-1 Cedar Rapids lead early in the third.  James Reeder scored on the power play for the Fighting Saints at 12:10, but Aiden Welch put the game away for the RoughRiders at 15:50 with his fifth goal of the year.

Scopa stopped 33 of the 35 shots he faced in the game.

Cedar Rapids head coach Mark Carlson picked up his 777th career win with Friday’s result. The USHL record for career coaching wins is held by P.K. O’Handley, who had 783 wins with the North Iowa Huskies from 1991-98 and the Waterloo Black Hawks from 2002-21.


Sioux City 2, Tri-City 1 overtime

It took overtime to determine the winner between Tri-City and Sioux City and it was the top goal-scorer in the league this year that closed it out for the host Musketeers.

Following a scoreless opening 20 minutes of action, Easton Jacobs gave Sioux City a 1-0 lead with his sixth goal of the season coming at 12:26.  Providence commit Trevor Connelly scored on the power play at 14:36 and the game stood 1-1 at the end of the second.

The two teams battled through a scoreless third period to set up the extra session.

Owen Keefe banked a pass off the boards to Kaden Shahan, who skated down the right side of the rink before cutting to the middle and backhanding a shot past Ivan Zhigalov for the game-winning goal at 2:49 of overtime. The goal is a league-high 22nd of the season for Shahan, who now has three game-winners this year.

Zhigalov stopped 25 shots for the Storm, while Samuel Urban turned aside 24 shots for the Musketeers.
