The United States Hockey League announced today that Dubuque Fighting Saints defenseman
Lucas St. Louis has been named 2023 USHL Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The award is given annually to the “most exemplary student in the USHL.” St. Louis becomes the fourth Fighting Saint to win the award, joining
Connor Kurth (2021),
Mason McCormick (2019) and
Alex Steeves (2018).
In Dubuque, we take academics very seriously,” said Dubuque General Manager
Kalle Larsson. “Providing a top-notch academic support system for our players is a priority and a core value of the organization. Lucas’ academic track record speaks for itself. Just like on the ice, his focus and dedication to learn and improve is impressive. We are proud of him being named the USHL Scholar-Athlete of the Year.”
St. Louis, who registered 3-21—24 in 61 games during the 2022-23 regular season, boasts a cumulative 3.95 grade point average and is committed to play college hockey at Harvard.
“We are ecstatic for Lucas to be recognized as the USHL scholar athlete of the year,” said Dubuque Head Coach
Kirk MacDonald. “The adjustment to the USHL can be challenging for any first year player and for Lucas to excel not only on the ice for the Fighting Saints but also off it, is an outstanding achievement and something Lucas should be very proud of.”
“Few athletes in this competitive community can balance their chosen sport with high-level academics,” said
Douglas M. Burdett, Assistant Head of School/Director of College Placement at Brunswick School. “By the time Lucas had finished his eleventh grade year with us, not only was he a leader of our varsity hockey team, but he was also on an academic path that had few rivals. Lucas was a leader in his AP BC Calculus class as well as AP Physics C.”
“Dubuque Fighting Saints defenseman Lucas St. Louis is an excellent choice as United States Hockey League Scholar-Athlete of the Year,” said USHL President and Commissioner
Bill Robertson. “St. Louis has displayed his top-notch play on the ice and an exceptional ability to excel as a student-athlete which will prepare him well for the future. The Harvard commit has an outstanding year with his studies at the Brunswick School, while being an outstanding leader in the classroom and on-ice with his Fighting Saints teammates. We wish Lucas and all the other USHL nominees the very best going forward with their academic and hockey success as this is a significant USHL award.”
