The Sioux Falls Stampede announced that defenseman Chad Ruhwedel has committed to UMass Lowell and will attend the school beginning in the fall of 2010.
The 19-year-old was named captain of the Stampede this season and has recorded four points (1g, 3a) in nine games. His plus-eight rating leads the team while also ranking tied for fifth in the USHL. Ruhwedel scored his first career USHL goal on October 16th while also dishing out two assists in the 9-1 win vs. Waterloo. The native of San Diego, California spent the 2008-09 season with the Stampede posting 11 points (11a) and a plus-12 rating in 55 games.
Three other current USHL players are committed to attend UMass Lowell following their USHL careers; Colton Saucerman (Des Moines Buccaneers), Will Rayner (Lincoln Stars), and Tyler Brickler (Sioux City Musketeers).
UMass Lowell is a member of Hockey East and the River Hawks have five former USHL players on their roster; Joe Caveney (Sioux City Musketeers), Sammy D'Agostino (Tri-City Storm), Jeremy Dehner (Green Bay Gamblers), Nick Schaus (Omaha Lancers), and team captain Ben Holmstrom (Sioux Falls Stampede).
