The Waterloo Black Hawks announced that forward Scott Wamsganz has committed to Colorado College and will attend the WCHA school following his USHL career.
The 17-year-old native of Anchorage, Alaska is in his first USHL season after being originally selected by the Black Hawks in the second round (21st overall) of the 2008 USHL Futures Draft. The 6-4, 200-pound Wamsganz has appeared in four games for the Black Hawks and recorded his first point, an assist, in the season-opening 5-4 shootout win vs. Green Bay.
"Scott's size and potential are very exciting for us, and I'm sure Colorado College feels the same way," said Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "He is one of several young players who could really make a big impact as a rookie this season in Waterloo."
Three other current USHL players are committed Colorado College; Eamonn McDermott (Fargo Force), Aaron Harstad (Green Bay Gamblers), and Dakota Eveland (Omaha Lancers).
Former Black Hawk goaltender Joe Howe is a freshman at Colorado College and was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week. He has posted a 2-0-1 record with a 1.62 GAA and .949 SV% this season.
Twelve other former USHL players are currently on the roster for the Colorado College Tigers; Scott Winkler (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders), Doug Leaverton (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders), Gabe Guentzel (Sioux Falls Stampede), Stephen Schultz (Lincoln Stars), Nate Prosser (Sioux Falls Stampede), Matt Overman (Sioux Falls Stampede), Nick Dineen (Sioux Falls Stampede), Tim Hall (Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets), Ryan Lowery (Lincoln Stars), Mike Testwuide (Waterloo Black Hawks), William Rapuzzi (Green Bay Gamblers), and Hudson Stremmel (Chicago Steel).
Colorado College is coached by Scott Owens who spent eight seasons as a head coach in the USHL. He led the Des Moines Buccaneers to the Clark Cup following the 1998-99 season. Owens also coached the Madison Capitols for four seasons (1986-90) earning USHL Coach of the Year honors during the 1987-88 campaign. He compiled a 261-129-10 record in his eight seasons behind the bench in the USHL.
